If someone puts a lien on your house will you be notified or will you find out when you try to sell it?

Simple answer. Generally… Yes.

Long answer: not always and it depends..

Generally any lien, defect or detriment to title will show up when a title search and insurance policy are issued.

The problem with this part of the answer is that this might not happen until very late in the sales process. In fact title is not always reviewed until the actual closing. This puts great pressure on the buyer and seller to “quickly” resolve the defect.

NOTE A lien should show on the title as any other incumberance. But it may not if it was recorded improperly.

FYI : A lien can be placed on your property by anyone at anytime. Just because it is there does not mean that you will have to pay money. Contact a local Real Estate Attorney for full details.
