Refund for appraisal due to appraisal not being completed

The appraisal was not completed due to no compliance from the sellers. An illegal converted garage had to be converted back to finalize the appraisal. The sellers were holding process back with many delays so deal was cancelled. Can I get part or a full refund of the appraisal since it was never completed?

You can ask, but don’t be surprised if there is little or nothing to refund. From the situation you describe my guess is that the illegally converted garage was identified by the appraiser. So, the appraiser did their work but a problem was found which needed to be corrected before the property could be financed. The appraiser did their job, just like if you hire a home inspector to look at the property and they identify a major problem with the house and the purchase falls apart because of it. They did the inspection and have a right to be paid for their work.

Hope this helps and that your transaction works out.

An appraiser is paid for work performed. Doesn’t matter if a home appraises low, if a purchase falls through, or if (as in this case) the home fails to meet normal lending standards. If they perform the work, it’s only reasonable for them to get paid.
