Check your local registry of deeds. Depending on your state custom, the deeds may be recorded on a town, county, or state level. In some areas, this information will be online, free or for a price - in others, you may have to visit the actual town or county office. The last recorded lien or liens on the property will be the interested parties. ALl other lienholders should have recorded a “discharge” of their prior lien. You will also be able to determine whether the property is in a state of foreclosure or not (homes may be abandoned for many reasons – sometimes the liens are still being paid by someone offsite). If this is your first time searching title records, a visit to the local registry may prove helpful. This information is public record in most (if not all) areas.
